I found myself on the quaint island of Malta recently. Time to dump the winter slump wrapped up with a side order of world chaos and fill my soul with peace and sumptuousness, ahhhhh.

Talk about well-timed. It’s a relief to be away from the epicentre of doom. In a mere two weeks there have been marches around the globe, wall-building plans and upheaval galore post-inauguration of Archie-Bunker-in-Chief. I shudder to think what the next 80 days will bring. It is a Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad world, sadly. People will be getting their daily steps in though because of many marches to come (plan for the science march on Earth day!), but I digress.

Malta’s beautiful rocky, rolling hills, rugged cliffs and Mediterranean sea breeze are incredibly embracing. The northern countryside is dotted with yellow and white clad towns, family farms and an expanse of charm. The Maltese people are benevolent.

I love being in a place that’s perfectly unpretentious. There’s natural raw beauty, meandering trails and scrumptious, local, wholesome food with barely a restaurant chain in sight! Food miles are limited, spying a fishing boat in the blue yonder. It’s catch ended up on my plate. Nothing can be finer!

Well folks, next month T & T will feature the Nutrition Month theme – Take the Fight out of Food! Spot the problem. Get the facts. Seek support. The only food fights I’m having this week is what to choose from the nourishing offerings.

While the sequel to Alice in Wonderland meets Poltergeist unfolds, I’ll be chilling on this little isle of Heaven….

Motivation 6 Ways

January 13th, 2015 No Comments Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

Hey baby, it might be cold outside, but hey, each day is getting a little brighter. They say that mid-January is when most New Year’s resolutions fizzle. Who’s “they” anyhow? If you’re adopting new lifestyle habits, doing the 3 x 3 or if you want to just feel jazzed every day work in a wide array of measures to keep your motivation sizzling and not fizzling. Don’t ever give UP!

Dress to Inspire Success & Joy – Dawn an outfit everyday that fits properly and makes you feel fab right from your undies to your coat. I don’t know about you, but slump-wear brings me down. How about you? Get some trusty ironside jeans and create your outfit around them. If you find yourself mindlessly eating, that tug on your tummy is your reminder to rein it in a little. Whether you’re working to achieve a lower weight or to just feel more inspired awash your outfit with colour too. That rainbow will lift your spirits as you take on the world!

Thought Stopping – What’s the tone of your inner voice? Are you loving yourself or berating yourself with criticism? Pay attention to those voices in your head and stop yourself when you’re about to self deprecate. Replace those thoughts with prose of kindness. You ARE enough!

Visualize the Prize – Have you spent a lifetime trying to lose weight when deep down you really don’t believe you can reach your ultimate goal? Not believing in yourself is the biggest barrier to success. Find time in a quiet place to meditate and visualize the prize daily – you at your goal weight. After all seeing IS believing!

Reward Building – For people who set realistic goals, reaching your ultimate weight loss goal will take many months. Work in small rewards to treat yourself for good behaviour throughout your journey and stay stoked.

Lead, Don’t Follow – When you make your personal goals aim to stick to them even when those shallow saboteurs try to throw you under the bus. Hey soul sister, we’re surrounded, so find strategies to block them. If you’re a consummate pleaser, start pleasing yourself first!

Just For Today – If you’re really feeling in a slump, don’t fret! Sometimes we plan so far in advance – for next month, next season, next year which seems soooo overwhelming and far from this moment. Take a breather and reframe your thinking to focus on the here and now “just for today”. When you just focus on today, all of your tomorrows will fall into place.

Finding ways to supercharge your motivation and attitude will help you sail through the rough spots we all face. Check out my e-book Skinny on Slim, The Little Black Dress of Diet Books for more strategies to keep you sizzling to success at Slim Town!

Freeze Frame the Christmas Reframe

December 18th, 2014 No Comments Tags: , , , , ,

Christmas reframe
Stop and freeze frame
Sparkle from within
Be genuine

Do things for the right reason
During this and every season
Be pure as snow
Bring joy – Ho! Ho! Ho!

Put a song in your heart
A gift of you, to impart
Listen more and talk less
Worth the effort, I confess

Give the benefit of the doubt
That’s what relationships are all about
Be a sweet elixir
A real strong bond fixer

Act the truth
That’s the proof
March to a new beat
Not always an easy feat

Help others and aim to feel
Peace and kindness, keep it real
Slow down and take the time
Make your inner light shine

In the Mood for this Fresh Fast Food!

June 6th, 2014 No Comments Tags: , , , , ,

I was meandering around the train station in Leipzig, Germany a short while ago and just so happened to stroll by a new outlet in among the fast food stalls. This one was different. How different you ask? It was chocked full of fresh fruits and veggies galore for those folks on the fly wanting to power up in the richest way possible. Check out every colour in the rainbow without food packaging other than the natural skins you find them in.

I love finding gem places like this that create a new mood for fresh fast food. People might not be partaking in their 5-10 servings a day of these nutritional powerhouses because they’re not readily available when away from home, as much as that other fast food is.

I couldn’t help myself and loaded up on a few to have on hand when afternoon hunger strikes, my first line of stealth snacking strategy to combat the tumble grumbles. It’s easier to make top choice snacking decisions when you act like a girl guide by being prepared!

Getting Your Zzzzzzz’s

April 11th, 2014 1 Comment Tags: , , , ,

We seem to be pacing life at mock speed these days, all of us taking part in the “busy contest”. Who’s winning? None of us, it would seem. I recently reviewed some studies on current sleep patterns and I won’t be sleeping easy thinking about this tonight!

One study touts that over the past 103 years children have reduced sleep more than 1 hour. Another study showed that in the US the amount of sleep has reduced by 102 hours over the past 40 years for young adults, hmmmm, what gives? Between checking our phones over a 100 times a day, consuming excess caffeine and immersing ourselves in life’s “busy contest” there are many contributors to this phenomenon.

One study showed an increase intake of calories from snacks when research subjects’ sleep was restricted and in another greater alcohol consumption in adults. Let’s think about this in our own lives using the example of travelling to different time zones and trying to make an adjustment in sleep. When feeling exceedingly groggy it’s not always simple to differentiate your cues and often snacking wins the vote. Also when you feel listless due to lack of sleep it’s more challenging to get that daily walk or activity that you’re used to when all you feel like doing is putting your noodle down on a fluffy pillow like Thumblina to catch up on the sleep you missed.

It is worthwhile to ponder your own sleep habits if you are burning the candle at both ends while trying to get a handle on your handles. More interesting food for thought, that’s for sure.

Rethink Shrink!

December 27th, 2013 No Comments Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , ,

I don’t know about you, but I need to take action on my stomach stretch receptors and fast to help make them shrink back to normal. How about you? Between the parties, the dinners, the lunches and the brunches my tum-tum has gotten used to eating and drinking a bit more than usual, don’t ya think? If I don’t do a full court press on this soon it might be hard to do a 180 shift if I wait until January 1 or later.

Last week while I was working around 10:00am my stomach was making those fake hunger grumbling sounds as if I was fasting for Ramadan and it was almost sundown. It wasn’t. I just had breakfast a few hours ago, and my brain knew that my stomach was playing a game – na na na na na.

One important strategy is up the ante on exercise and activity now that you have some spare time on your hands. Take in all that winter has to offer, bundle up and vamoose outside and move that caboose – walk, play, toboggan, shovel….

The other thing NOT to do is fall prey to the ole “oh, I won’t eat all day and wait for dinner”. No no no on that one. You can head down a slippery slope of binging and fasting as fast as you can say Dahoo Dorey. Don’t skip ANY meals and make sure you get your appetite suppressant- protein at meals to ensure you feel satisfied. If your blood sugar plunges too quickly because you’ve only  nibbled on veggies and fruit all day you’ll be truly famished and tempted to nosh on those many leftover goodies that may be hanging around. Why do they call them goodies when at this point we know they aren’t??!!

Speaking of which, make a plan to share your goodies with neighbours, family, friends, perhaps freeze some. But if all of these treat dishes are sitting under your nose for the coming week you can do a big slide-a-rooney from now to New Year’s and your slinky black number you were planning on wearing New Year’s Eve might need to be taken out – OUCH.

I don’t think that’s part of your plan. So put your thinking cap on and fast, make a plan, check it twice and for goodness sakes, think shrink!!

And speaking of little black dresses, get reading Skinny on Slim The Little Black Dress of Diet Books and fast, for more healthy and stealthy tips which will set you up perfectly to take on the New Year right around the corner.

Piece of Peace, 2013

December 23rd, 2013 No Comments Tags: , , , , , ,

A piece of fruitcake.

A piece of jewellery.

A piece of plum pudding.

A piece in the centre of the table.

A piece of trifle.

A piece of technobabble.

A piece of brownie.

A piece of a puzzle. Hmmmmmm

There are a lot of pieces of stuff this time of year – food stuff, material stuff, technological stuff. You name it, it’s out there and at a better price this week than ever. Take a moment to think about your best material stuff. Does it make you happy? Does it bring you joy? Does it make you feel superior than others because you have this special piece in your possession? Do you feel less than when you don’t have your special piece? Oh for the love of stuff – those bits and pieces.

Of all of the gifts I hope for you to receive this Christmas, I hope you get the best piece of all – peace. It is a choice to seek and find peace you know. It’s right there for the taking. You can find peace in special relationship bonds, peace in serene music, peace in quiet moments, peace in your home, peace at your work, peace while you’re driving. If you look hard enough you can find peace. Sometimes it’s not all that apparent, but it’s there. I’ve always loved that line of Glinda The Good Witch from the Wizard of Oz telling Dorothy she had it in her possession all along – the missing piece to get her home to Kansas. Peace is like that for all of us. It’s there for the taking, but you have to choose to find it and keep it, nurture it and cherish it. Peace.

With peace brings serenity.

With peace brings answers.

With peace brings joy.

With peace brings sensibility.

With peace brings goodness.

With peace brings what’s right.

Choose peace.

May peace be with you & yours this Christmas, and may God bless.

Christmas Reflections

December 18th, 2013 No Comments Tags: , , , , ,

Looking great!

Shiny bling
Songs to sing

Gifts to get
My table’s set?

Cookie crumbs
Hymns to hum

To and fro
Friendships to grow

Time to spend
Not to pretend

Keep it real
By being still

Getting out
Of what it’s all about

Gift of you
Can be so brand new!

Don’t get reeled in
By all the spin

Priorities straight
Choose love, not hate

Together nourish
Time to cherish

You and me
And family….

A Better You

November 18th, 2013 No Comments Tags: , , , , ,

All alone?
Unplug the phone

Relief from stress

Rehearse my talk
Then take a walk

Time to write
A poem I might

Some chores to do
My home renew

Make a plan
The week at hand

Get up to date
On food and state

Reading list
Not to miss

What’s going on
In my field and beyond

Try to strive
And feel alive

Help renew
To a better you
