There are times when I feel I need to nurture my brain as I get older, worrying that my grey matter is dwindling – ug. There are times that I search for a word at the tip of my tongue that pops into my mind 3 hours after the conversation happened or I lose my train of thought mid sentence or forget your bank card pin when you’re down to your last 5 bucks and there are 5 impatient people standing in the line behind you – double ug.
I spend a lot of time talking about eating well, getting fit and keeping your heart healthy while not spending ample time on ways to nurture your noodle with 50 shades of grey matter – our bountiful brain!
Truth be told many of the foods I encourage you to include in your diet to keep you healthy do double time to benefit your brain too. My June 7, 2013 post provided a short list of foods to help your weight for example. Three of these are brain boosters too:
- whole grains – whether as bread, noodles, cereals or crackers work them
- fruits and veg – namely blueberries, black currants, tomatoes and broccoli
- nuts – try the salt free variety and enjoy them as snacks, in salads or to add crunch in your stir fry or veggie dish

While you’re at it try some oily fish such as salmon, trout, mackerel, herring, sardines, pilchards and kippers. Consider planting some sage in your herb garden and add it in some key dishes you make to mix flavours up a bit without all of that salt. A dash of this, a serving of that or a snack of the other can all work in your favour if you are working on being healthier from head to toe.
Our body surely is our temple and we need to nurture every part. Don’t forget the grey matter, it should be top of mind!
