Extra PUSH

August 5th, 2013 No Comments Tags: , , , , ,

A cloud filled sky
A morning sigh
It rained all night
And I ask why?

My thyroid pill
From the windowsill
Need an extra boost
More espresso I will

It’s dark outside
My goal to abide
To take my walk
But I will confide

A sleepy head
Wanna stay in bed
Some cooler temps
That chill I dread

I drag my butt
My eyes half shut
The morning splendour
Helps me out of my rut

Those distinct bird calls
The trees stand tall
A rosy sky gleams
And I no longer stall

Around the bend
My walk does end
Ready to take on the day
A productive one I will spend….

Make Way for Food Day

August 2nd, 2013 No Comments Tags: , , , , , , , ,

Apparently it has been declared “Food Day” in Canada, August 3, hmmmm. I’m not sure what’s so special about this particular date, after all I consider every day a food day wherever I may be.

When I think about food in Canada some choices stand out:

  • BC cherries
  • Alberta beef
  • Canola and wheat from Saskatchewan
  • Blueberries and potatoes from the east
  • Salmon
  • Apricots from the Okanagan
  • Artisanal cheeses from Quebec
  • Fresh water, not only from rain and floods…
  • Yukon arctic char
  • Fraser Valley duck
  • Grey County lamb
  • And the list goes on and on….

I do suppose it’s a good idea to mark a day that honours something as important as our local food. Just think about all of those macro and micronutrients, vitamins and minerals that fuel every cell of our being to help our “body as temple” function to the MAX. These days food is plentiful and available everywhere you look. However some wayward habits have crept into many people’s repertoires that does not necessarily honour our nourishment. We have cars with huge cup holders, power windows used at the drive thru, “fast food” meant to be eaten on the run and gobbled down with little attention to it, sigh….. Not my idea of a happy meal….

Food is so sacred in the way it fuels and nourishes our bodies, binds people together when breaking bread while tantalizing our tastebuds. We certainly are what we eat. Upholding the importance of our food should be paramount for all on Food Day in Canada and every dang day.

Whether it’s August 3rd or a week from next Friday make a pact to hold your food in high esteem, won’t you? Enjoy it in it’s most natural form. Put it on a plate, set a lovely table, light a candle or two, put on some mellow tunes (Chris Botti, perhaps?) and share it with family and friends. Something tells me that if we started to work these new habits into our repertoires we’d have better health, closer relationships and stronger families, don’t you think?

Happy Food Day today, and every day!
