Divide UP and Conquer

Have you loaded up your pantry like a bear getting ready to hibernate?? Have you saved a bundle of dough on pillow sacks of snacks?? I can certainly relate. Now if you wanna save a bundle of calories as snack-haven gets opened for the next nosh-fest, listen up.

Do yourself a favour and stock up on snack-sized baggies. Now after a meal when your munchies are at bay add 100 calories worth of your snack food into these bags and you’ve got yourself a bunch of smart sacks of snacks!!

Studies show that everyone in your family will munch fewer calories when they reach for these snack handy packs rather than grabbing for the feed-bag-o-junk. Also consider using a small bowl or plate for snacking at home. People eat much more when they mindlessly nibble from the original bags but much less when portioned out.

This is one smart trick to save money buying the economy size AND calories by divvying the mother load up of treats. That’s putting your snacking into proportion, don’t you think??!!

If It’s Too Good to be True, IT AIN’T

I read about Pai You Guo recently in the Sunday NY Times. It’s another potion with empty promises to get you slim and translates to “the fruit that eliminates fat”. Sounds like a stir fry to me, but I digress……

Holy Mary, Mother of God this whole potion promotion drives me mad!! Let me tell you what fruit helps eliminate fat – it’s the fruit of your labour of cutting back what you eat and drink while exercising more. That’s what’ll help eliminate fat. Day after day, week after week, month after month of chipping away at this proverbial iceburg WILL get results. And that’s a REAL promise.

I golfed with a gal from my neighbourhood yesterday – Wendy who told me she lost 18 pounds over months and counting – you know the old fashioned way. My Mom and Mother Dearest have as well. How great is that?? VERY that’s how.

There are no magic bullets in life especially in the weight loss department. If you do try some wonky quick fix it’ll come back to bite you every time – IN SPADES. That is a promise too. So, take the long way home, which is the right way. So remember folks:

  • Persistence pays off
  • Stay the course
  • Slow and steady wins the race
  • Live long and prosper….oh that doesn’t really apply to this post, but I like it anyways. Who doesn’t love Spock :-)

Congratulations Wendy, Connie and Ruth for your diligence and persistence and keep at it. And to all of you out there taking your time to lose weight for good. Your efforts are NOT in vain.

Food Revolution – Yes Sir’s Ole Smoothie

We paid a visit to my bro-in-law’s (aka Yes Sir) a short while back and he served us this ole smoothie. Hmmm you are what you drink, right? MmMmmMm good!! I was ready to take on the world then go yodelling in the mountains after downing my glass full. And he obliged me by sharing his secret recipe….eventually :-)

Ingredients
5-10 washed prepared berry combo (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries), plus 1 banana (optional)
1-2 tsp seed combo (hemp seed, flax seeds, salba seeds/white chia seeds)
1-2 Tbsp raw coconut oil
1-2 Tbsp raw honey
1-2 Tbsp bee pollen
1 tsp spirulina (optional)
washed prepared broccoli, to your liking (optional)
1 Tbsp cinnamon
1 Tbsp tumeric
1 Tbsp raspberry sauce, to your liking
1 Tbsp NutraSea High DHA omega 3 supplement
1 tsp Udo’s oil 3-6-9 blend-DHA, GLA

Instructions
Fill your blender 1/3 full of fluid ( i.e. water, skim milk, dollop of plain yoghurt). Prepare all ingredients and add to your blender. Close the lid tightly and turn on the speed to high until smooth, making the consistency to your preference. Add water until it is the consistency you like. Refrigerate. Can keep refrigerated for 3-5 days.

Commentary

I’m really nuts about anything made with berries, that’s for sure!! These ole smoothie combinations are perfect to prepare ahead of time and have ready in the fridge. If you find yourself on-the-run this is great for breakfast or lunch, as a snack or when you need a boost. Bye bye frappa–whatcha-macholit-cino!!

Make sure to include more strawberries and blueberries than raspberries as the raspberries can be one overpowering berry. Keep in mind refrigerating it will thicken it up so you may want to add water. It’s up to you. My bro-in-law makes it fresh and drinks it all and he has the glow to prove it!! He finds when he does drink it in the morning or for lunch he’s too full to want anything else. After he drinks it he pounds his chest and says “YES SIR that was sure good”!! Give it a try and repeat after him….

A little trivia – the white cia seed is called “salba seed” which is the highest quality of chia. So when you say salba seeds its actually white chia seeds. Hmmmm fancy that on the fancy name. Who knew?? And I only thought chia seeds grew on chia pets….and bald men who are trying to fill in the gaps of hair on their head……

Well, now I know what to make when Arnie Schwarznager pops in to visit. I wasn’t quite sure until now. May the Schwartz be with you :-)

I’m going to find that mountain and go yodelling….”yodel-eh-heee-hooo”!!

Put CREATION Back in ReCREATION

I read an article in the newspaper on why our local parks aren’t being used as much as intended and what the city can do about it. Hmmmm I wondered. They thought perhaps we need to add elements to the areas to add interest and entice usage. At which point I put the paper down and scratched my head in wonder….. good grief.

I gave this more thought and reminisced back in the day, that your park is what you make of it. Just add a ball, for example. You can kick it, hit it, bounce it, double dribble it, throw it, run with it and more. The skies the limit really, don’t you think?? What’d be really great is if parents limited their kids screen time and sent the kids outdoors to play. Trust me, they will figure it out and you might just need to fight with them to get them back in the house.

The best part about free play is the “creation” part. From a young age, kids these days get accustomed to new-fangled, high-tech games where you use more of your thumb power than your brain power. Try giving kids a clean slate in an open park and allow them to just have fun with it. That’ll put the CREATION back in ReCREATION in no time!!
