Keep the Olympic flame burning!

February 21st, 2018 No Comments Tags: , , , , ,

There’s nothing I don’t love about the Olympics. Even though I am a self proclaimed tortoise I get pumped watching athletes perform their craft. Further, faster, stronger, better are all goals we can all relate to and strive for in our own lives.

Olympians go for gusto. They are certainly not fair-weather participants. They push through barriers we mere mortals can barely fathom to improve their time, pass their competitor or land that jump without wavering.

I won’t be joining an olympic team any time soon because tortoises don’t qualify. I will however be more mindful of how I can do my body right one baby step at a time. Maybe I’ll take an extra stroll in the day; perhaps I’ll dial down on second helpings; how about getting down on my mat an extra day or two in the week to tighten my core or make my lunch more often.

Winter is a perfect time of year to take it up a notch to rethink your goals to get in shape for when spring is sprung! If your get up and go got up and went, time to find it and get in gear, don’t you think? Why just watch sports when you can add some new moves to your repertoire and get active!

Consider jumpstarting your heart if you’ve been in a slump lately. Plan on extending your efforts to all of the seasons of the year, taking each day as it comes. As long as I’m able to move one foot in front of the other, I am committed to continue my ‘movement movement‘. How about you?

Keep the Flame Alive!
Well it’s life back to normal
The Games are almost a wrap
After McMorris’ story
I walked another lap

Got to thinking about what
This all means in my life
Triple flips and double sow cows
Being active doesn’t need to create strife

The lycra and spandex
Never looked this darn good! (mainly on Olympians!)
Treating body as temple
Is something we should

For we mere earth mortals
Making a goal is a start
To move our bodies, as it was meant
I so very smart

Start a ‘movement movement’
Rise up off the couch
Oh ye young and old
Finding 30-60 minutes, isn’t that much

You’ll feel better and toned
Energetic and shvelt
Your hourglass figure
Might warrant a belt!

Keep that flame alive everyday
Whether it’s gleaming or dim
And do yourself a favour
Press ‘start’ and begin!

What is love?

February 14th, 2018 No Comments Tags: , , , ,

What is love?
Sent from above
So alluring
With work, enduring

A gift of time
Smiling ray of sunshine
A passing glance
Simple romance

A soft touch
What you do says much
It’s understanding
Not demanding

A reservation
No consternation
Simplicity
Implicitly

Kind seeds sown
Good deeds unknown
Family and friend
Love to the end

Valentine
Roses and wine?
Show thy love
All the time

Christmas Reframe

December 23rd, 2017 No Comments

Christmas reframe
Stop and freeze frame
Sparkle from within
Be genuine

Do things for the right reason
During this and every season
Be pure as the snow
Bring joy – Ho! Ho! Ho!

Put a song in your heart
A gift of you, to impart
Listen more, talk less
Worth the effort, I confess

Give the benefit of the doubt
That’s what relationships are about
Be a sweet elixir
A strong bond fixer

Act the truth
Be the proof
Eyes open, love find
Bring peace, be kind

Help one another and feel
Peace and kindness, keep it real
Slow down, take time
Make your inner light shine

Limerick for Ellie

October 15th, 2015 No Comments Tags: , , , ,

There is a new baby named Ellie
Coming into the world she did dilly dally
Arrived Saturday by 10
Let the party begin!
To welcome our new baby Ellie

An armful of perfection she is
Took to breastfeeding just like a whiz
Awake and asleep
Oh so new
Love runs deep
That armful of perfection she is

Ellie’s parents are such a great team
A 2-some any new baby would dream
The love and the care
No one could
Quite compare
That Ellie’s parents are truly a dream team

Family love awashes Ellie all round
She doesn’t even need to make a sound
By her side we will stand
There to give
Her a hand
Family love awashes Ellie all round

Let’s rise up to make our world a better place
For all the Ellie’s of every single race
That’s what life’s all about
Go on
Don’t ever doubt
We can all work to improve this place

… welcome to the grand fam Ellie Francis, I will always have your back!

Snap Back to Normal Post Vacation

August 13th, 2015 2 Comments Tags: , , , , , , , ,

Who doesn’t love a vacation? The readjustment once you return home isn’t for the faint of heart though. After you’ve clicked the heels of your proverbial ruby slippers it’s time to hit the ground running after being in la la land – don’t you think? Gone are the breakfast buffets, lunch choices galore and over flowing glasses of wine. You can still hear Billy Joel sing “..bottle of white, bottle of red..” Time to change the tune; we will overcome!

Vamoose Your Caboose – My most important rule of thumb is to vamoose yourself back into your pre-vacay eating and activity routine and FAST. Porridge anyone? Though get thee to the grocery store to stock up on a multitude of healthy choices STAT. Bye bye truffles on your pillow, a fond and tasty farewell.

Ignore the Gypsy Music – It is also imperative to be mindful of the grumbling games your stomach will be making. Don’t confuse this gypsy music as hunger, but from overeating day after day. Yes folks reality bites! I usually find it takes a few days to get my tummy stretch receptors back to normal by eating smaller amounts. Ensure half your plate is fruits and veggies at every meal and stick with water as your go-to beverage. Be patient and tune out the grumbling.

Bend, Stretch & Move – It’s also time to to blow the dust off your mat and weights and resume your full array of exercises with GUSTO. I’ll confess that sometimes when I’m away the only sit up I’ve done is rolling out of bed in the morning. Time to feel the burn by reigniting your routine.

Is a Cleanse On your Mind? – Some people wonder if a GI cleanse is in order. Hmmmm good question. The only maneuver like that I’d recommend is booking your colonoscopy if you haven’t scheduled it. Other than that your own liver and kidneys will do the job for you while you load up on fresh produce, home cooking and water.

Here’s a little rhyme on the topic….

A mound of laundry
A pile of mail
My porridge bowl
And bread gone stale

A grocery list
In need of stuff
The long flight home
Now enough is enough!

A dinner offering
Not paired with wine
Back to my walk
When the morning sun shines

Time-change adjustment
Need a fast switch
My mat and weights
I’m feeling the itch

It’s great to travel
Love a change of scene
But snap back to normal
With your trusty routine!

Really though, there’s no place like home…..

“I hate summer!” said no one EVER!

June 24th, 2015 No Comments Tags: , , , , , ,

I hate summer!
Said no one EVER!
Longer days
And better weather

Outdoor sports
Golf skorts
Bare feet and
Extreme weather reports!

Lovely breeze
Allergic sneeze?
Gardening and
Towering trees

Time to bike
Or take a hike
Roller blade or
Fly a kite

Take the #StepCountChallenge
And #SneakItIn
#MakeYourDayHarder
Hike up your routine!

Stay outdoors!
Try a new golf course
Take up tennis?
Perfect time to move more!

Your Night Before Christmas

December 22nd, 2014 No Comments Tags: , , , , , ,

T’was the night before Christmas and all in my head,
Was a real long “to do” list, and a big sense of dread.

I had come down to realize that I would make me a plan,
And to get started and make it, with ideas I ran.

I mulled some things over and made me a list,
One of these, one of those, eh, there was nothing I missed!

I would focus on what’s right during this most solemn time,
That brings joy and meaning, my thoughts turned on a dime.

With merriment, faith, joy, hope and love all abound,
Soul searching helps these feelings eventually come ’round.

For this outlook was different with focus on purpose,
Helps priorities align to what’s important to us.

Our neighbour is older and can use a hand,
With the snow shovelling perhaps or a sprinkle of sand.

My friend in my hood is going through chemo,
Could use a prayer, a kind word or allow her to give an earful.

What the season’s about, well it is all up to you,
It can focus on “me me me”, or it can focus on what’s true.

You can spend all your time fretting about what others will say,
Or you can do what is right and say “yo, what the hey!”

Soon the big day is coming, so will yours be alright?
With attention on others, bringing goodness and light?

Ya it’s fun to partake in the parties with wine,
After some goblets of “Oculus” you’ll be feeling mighty fine!

Try to remember what others are doing,
Is there food on their table? Are there some troubles brewing?

The very thought of that notion puts a lump in my throat,
Our Christmas Caravan gives to the needy with food or a coat.

What you make of this season is all up to you,
You can worry about you or what’s important to do.

Change of your focus from inward to outward I say,
With thought, time and effort you can make someone’s day.

It’s the littlest thing, that can mean so much in this world,
And one deed leads to another then another unfurled.

Then you’ll see that your focus on “me, myself and I”,
You’ll open your heart and look up to Heaven and say “my oh my”!

Find perspective on life, where priorities should be,
Cause at the end of the day it’s not all about me.

Get moving, get helping, be productive and then,
You’ll find the pieces of the puzzle fall into place again.

Merry Christmas to you, your family and others,
Cause we’re really all related, we’re all sisters and brothers.

March to a new beat
Not always an easy feat

Snowfall

December 12th, 2014 No Comments Tags: , , , , , ,

Snowfall
I stall
Not yet!
I fret

Sharp cold
Be bold
Scarf, hat
Make a pact

Head out
No pout
Fresh air
I dare

Walk fast
Time past
Around the bend
Home again

Not so bad
I’m glad
It’s only snow
Not Buffalo!

Portugal

Portugal
Speaks to the soul
People are real
A very big deal

Less pretence
More substance
Travel around
A special something surrounds

Land and sea
So almighty
Farm vines through stone
Olive groves roll beyond

Seeped in history
A fine place to be
Culture entwines
Out your pours, in your mind

Medieval sites
Imagination ignites
Mediterranean gem
Will return again

Historical
Cultural
Wonderful
Portugal
